What People are Saying About
Deneen and ActWith
Your presentation “The Natives are Restless” at
the luncheon on Friday cuts to the core of what we as teachers/educators
must recognize if we are to reach the students of today. I have
to admit, I was slow to understand the message, but I was flabbergasted
by the number of teachers/administrators/educators who so quickly
jumped to their feet for a standing ovation. I thought why does
the audience like this fast talking “lady” who is
so confusing and changes her topics. It baffled me so much.
Eureka!
It hit me how kids are so wired, and we as educators must not
only recognize this new wiredness, but adjust accordingly and
use the technology skills which the students have acquired to
engage them even more.

Library Graduate Student

Deneen Frazier Bowen was a presenter at our annual technology
conference for school superintendents, principals and supervisors
in July 2005. Her excellent keynote performance on “Discovering
and Enjoying the Digital Mind” combined her acting talents
with her vast knowledge of technology through the eyes of students.
Ms. Bowen ignites the room with energy and provokes the educational
mind with students’ thinking. She accurately depicts essential
technology needs in education now and for the future. Her workshop
on data was just as powerful in the sense that it stimulated
the audience’s desire to work through data driven decision
making. The workshop evaluations were excellent and many of the
participants recommended that must we bring her back next year.
We really appreciate Deneen Frazier Bowen’s talents and
creativity.

I have attended numerous conferences, watched informative slide
shows and have even prepared Power Point presentations related
to similar topics, but have not been as moved as I was with your
powerful entertaining performance. Read

This
keynote (Natives are Restless) was very inspirational. It reminds
one that to be a good teacher you must listen to your
students. Do not treat them like saran wrapped kids (we see
through the kids, making judgments based on what appears on the
surface.
We can become educational leaders by having conversations with
our students. Going online helps some students get through
the day because at “regular school you check your mind in at
the door but at a virtual school you check your body at the door.” This
allows students to “open their own doors without a mirror
(how others view them) getting in the way.”

It is a rare experience to have a message so powerful it soaks
through the silicon skin of today's educators. But you delivered
just that kind of message to your NECC audience yesterday.
Whow! Yours was the most meaningful keynote I’ve heard
in my professional career. The soul-stretching power of your
message is obvious. Thanks for your gutsy message and powerful
performance. It was fantastic! -- Ruth E. Blankenbaker

I was reviewing my NECC conference notes and I wanted you to
know how much I enjoyed your presentation (performance) at
the conference. Well done! The message was loud and clear.

I loved your NECC presentation yesterday. It was the best presentation
I have been too. The way you got the message across in a subtle
way was very interesting. Many of your scenarios relate to my
6th grade classroom. If you are ever in Pennsylvania, and want
to talk with a class of students, I would love to have you come
to my school!

Thank you for the stupendous performance today-- great reminder
that play and putting ourselves into the minds of others is how
true learning occurs.

I took about 10 pages of notes during your "Polar Pint
presentation" – it was riveting. I am not surprised
that you came up with such a long list of issues raised by your
show. So much of your presentation is so incredibly powerful.
It's clear that you did lots and lots (and lots) of research.
And you rock as an actress, too, by the way! Thank you again
for getting me really excited about my new role as a "Lead
Technology Teacher" at my school next year.
